Shadows over San Francisco Bay
The Bay Metro
The Bay Metro (or the San Francisco Bay Metropolis) is 3 interconnected sprawls. San Francisco, Oakland, and San Jose, and the Intersprawl Zones which are not under the jurisdiction of any single sprawl, like Redwood City and Fremont.
The Bay Metro has a long history that predates the Awakened world by hundreds of years. The California Gold Rush, the hippie counterculture, and the computer/internet revolution all began here. After the Awakening, the Bay became home to Major Offices for all of the leading MegaCorporations on the Planet.
In 2036, the birth of the California Free State sparked the opportunistic annexation of San Diego by Atzlan, Los Angeles by the Pueblo Corporate Council, and a full-fledged invasion from Tir Tairngire. With only what remained of the National Guard and Reserves, the Governor appealed to Japan for assistance. Japan responded with the California Expeditionary Brigade of the Imperial Japanese Marines and the Third Imperial Fleet. The result was an almost immediate cessation of hostilities in the South and a withdrawal of the Tir Tairngire forces North past Yreka. A formal cease-fire between the California Free State and Tir Tairngire established a Disputed Zone between the two states stretching from Yreka to Redding. Instead of leaving however, the California Expeditionary Brigade remained in San Francisco to “protect Japanese lives and corporate interests.” San Francisco would remain occupied for the next 31 years until President Nathalie Ortiz negotiated a formal withdrawl in 2069.
